According to what he witnessed, he said that \u2018speed\u2019 was a minor factor in traffic crashes.<\/p>\n
\u201cPolice across the world have got one thing in mind as part of road safety \u2013 speeding is a major risk factor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it is irresponsible behavior that causes accidents. I heard over the radio the other day that they were asking motorists to check the conditions of their tires.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Balushi, Head of the Peripheral Areas Traffic Department, warned motorists that faulty tires<\/a> could result in a fine of up to AED200 and confiscation of the vehicle for a week.<\/p>\n \u201cA tire that is not fit for use is more dangerous than me going 21kph over the speed limit and getting fined AED600,\u201d Mr Cilli\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It usually takes him 75 minutes from his home to his Abu Dhabi office on the Corniche.<\/p>\n \u201cThe road to Abu Dhabi from Dubai is one long stretch of road. What are the risks? There aren\u2019t any,\u201d Mr Cilli\u00e9 said. \u201cYes, speeding is risky if it\u2019s on a Thursday afternoon and the highway is flooded with cars.\u201d<\/p>\n He said he regularly saw motorists driving in the emergency lane to pass other cars.<\/p>\n \u201cEveryone is in a hurry,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are where they\u2019re not supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n On Wednesday, Mr Cilli\u00e9 spotted cars changing lanes on Muroor Road without using indicators, which he said showed a lack of courtesy and education among drivers.<\/p>\n \u201cYou see those cars driving past us?\u201d he asked. \u201cHow many of them are not using indicators? How many of them are swerving?\u201d<\/p>\n Traffic cameras<\/a> have failed to act as an effective deterrent to speeding and dangerous driving, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe cameras are actually more of a risk,\u201d Mr Cilli\u00e9 said. \u201cWhen a driver sees a camera on the road, he slams on his brakes. My personal opinion on these cameras? It\u2019s a money-making scheme. A lot of people can afford to pay the speeding [fine]. For a lot of people, Dh600 is nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n Radar speed cameras are more like speed bumps, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cYou drive fast in between the bumps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He believes education is essential to prevent and reduce accidents along with effective patrolling and enforcement.<\/p>\n \u201cThere should be a change in the attitude towards driving,\u201d Mr Cilli\u00e9 said. \u201cBeing safe is a choice one has to make.
