Registering a Used Car

Whenever you have planned   to buy  a used car from anywhere except buying it from a  dealer, it is expected that the buyer will have to acquire the Istemara which is  car’s registration transferred it to the next owner’s name. A car will not usually be re-registered, but will keep on its existing three-year registration time, and  the buyer on need to get their car by their name through the paperwork.

The date of expiration is written in Arabic on the Istemara card . Though, the dates will be specified according to dates in the Islamic calendar, which is approximately 8 to 10 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. Should be concerned about  not to miss the  expiry date,  because it  can take you  a large fine or other financial punishment.

In order To renew the Istemara, it is must that the car should be submitted to have  MVPI ( motor vehicle periodic inspection). This will need to have various inspections and test which includes checking the car’s lights, its brakes working properly , wheel alignment, wheels, body condition,  side mirrors, front screen and exhaust release. Before formally testing the  car, it is recommended to go for  its cleaning and servicing.

Cars which are used  more than five years, usually doesn’t pass the test  at the first attempt, and a list  is issued which mentions that following issues should be fix to pass the test. If the car doesn’t pass in the inspection, then it must be taken to a garage to fixed those problems, and then resent the car for test again. each time when you go for the test, the owner of the car  has to bear the charges for its test.

Documents required

There are some documents which have to be submitted to the specific office of the traffic police. The list of these documents is given below:

  • A green folder have  all the  documents which are needed .
  •  application form completely filled . For a duplicate (in Arabic)
  • A Copy of the existing Istemara .
  • Evidence for showing ownership of the car
  • A Copy of the car insurance document
  • Legal certificate of  motor vehicle periodic inspection (MVPI)
  • Payment Receipt of the related fees at an ATM.
  • A Copy of the car  owner’s Residence Permit ( Iqama).
  •  Introductory letter  from the guarantor (generally the employer)
  • A Copy of a driving license . should be valid one.
